Beach Huts

These series of large canvasses depict the iconic beach huts which line the Brighton seafront. Privately owned, these huts are often brightly painted and provide a colourful, frequently garish but fun juxtaposition next to the ever changing hues of the sea. The huts are in various states of repair: some shiny and new, and some rusting and in need of work.

[…] every single one of the beach huts that line the Hove seafront was depicted.

Jim cycles along the seaside early every weekday morning, and sketches from around 6:00 until 9:00, come rain or shine, and for this project would collect hundreds of small pencil drawings detailing the colours and individual characteristics of the huts before going back to his studio to work on the canvasses for the rest of the day.

Accurate notes and sketches were taken over the course of many months of the colours and state of each hut, and over these canvasses, every single one of the beach huts that line the Hove seafront was depicted.
